Clover Valley rams to higher top price and average

Clover Valley stud co-principal Brad Medlyn said it was a very strong result.

"[The top-priced ram] was a very well-structured ram, he was long and smooth in the shoulders and a real White Suffolk type," Mr Medlyn said.

Lot 15, an April 2020-drop ram sired by Depta Grove DG15076, was bought by Stuart and Glenda Wilson, Campbells Forest.

He had an eye muscle width of 99 millimetres, an eye muscle depth of 47mm, a fat measurement of 8mm and eye muscle area of 35.83 square centimetres.

His birthweight was 4.8 kilograms.

Last year, Clover Valley cleared all 50 rams on offer to a $2750 top price, which was $150 above the previous top price, while the 2020 average of $1211 was up $250.

Mr Medlyn said the introduction of Depta Grove and Kurralea rams had started to pay dividends.

"Given the current conditions, we were surprised at the average lifting as much as it did, but under current prices it probably wasn't out of the question," he said.

He said producers were turning to White Suffolks to use over Merinos because of their ease of lambing and quick growth rates.

McKean McGregor livestock agent Zeb Broadbent said Clover Valley offered a very even line up of rams, with particular stand outs at the top end.

"The most impressive thing was they were structurally very good, with good muscle and fat," Mr Broadbent said.

He said the top-priced ram ticked all the boxes.

"He was nice and long, nice and thick, with good eye muscle, low birthweight and was also a triplet," he said.

"He stood very well, nice, proud and strong."

The Wilsons picked up another five rams, John and Russell Rothacker, Derby, bought four, while Tim White, Charlton, bought two.
