There is very interesting background to the Ballanee Angus stud, which is reputedly the first registered Angus stud, in Victoria, if not Australia.
Somewhere in the 1960’s the Ballanee Angus stud was sold, purchased by two different producers. One of these producers was Ian Mills. The stud was split with the other portion going to the Monaro, and renamed Sparta Angus.
Both studs have a very good name. At the Pakenham store sale, Thursday, three or four different producers from Gippsland, sold Angus cattle sired by Ballanee bulls.
Tom O’Connor was one of these producers selling Angus steers at Pakenham.
Occasionally, one sees the Sparta Angus name on pen cards in Pakenham and Leongatha sales, but mostly in the Cooma sales.
Ballanee Angus is respected, known for the growth of both bone and muscle, but remains a relativley, local and small stud.
Ian Mills was at Pakenham, Thursday, to see the lines of cattle sold, that were Ballanee blood.
